Keira Knightley, the soccer player of “Bend It like Beckham” and the love interest of Orlando Bloom in “Pirates of the Caribbean” is a book worm. Seems amazing, isn’t it? Actually she has a hidden obsession for “depressing” novels like Bernhard Schlink’s Holocaust novel “The Reader” and “Revolutionary Road” by Richard Yates.
She recently revealed her love for the “gloomy narratives” in one of her interviews to a magazine. The 23-year-old actress also confessed digging her nose in bleak books on every opportunity that she can confiscate, and when she was questioned about her favorites amongst the all she has read she said “I enjoyed Gitta Sereny’s “Into That Darkness”: From Mercy Killing to Mass Murder – the story of World War II Nazi extermination camp “Treblinka” and books by legendary war correspondent Martha Gellhorn.
According to her these are depressing books, but really good and are not a hindrance to laughter. Knightley said “Not exactly happy, but yet they are interesting. Really great writing creates such amazing images”. She added: “It’s a compilation of investigative journalism. It’s awful, but the way she writes is wonderful. I just started it. I’d never read any Martha Gellhorn before, and she’s a wonderful writer.”
